DESCRIPTION:Pijus Krūminas will discuss how to use modeling techniques in social science and apply them to wargaming.\n\n\nDescription: Social scientists are known to use various mathematical modelling techniques whether game theory\, equilibrium\, agent-based\, big data-driven or other types of models. They also attract weighty criticism due to oversimplification\, assumptions used and the complexity of social reality among other reasons. This webinar will focus on the relationship between wargaming and other modelling approaches in social sciences\, especially game theory. What are the key complementarities? We will locate wargaming in this broader map of social science models to see how it can contribute to better learning and better understanding of social reality. \nBio: Pijus Krūminas is an Associate Professor and programme director at ISM University of Management and Economics in Vilnius\, Lithuania. There he runs classes on wargaming\, game theory\, and comparative politics\, supervises theses based on games as a data collection method\, and simply educates about serious games. Throughout its forty-six chapters\, this Commentary meticulously examines various provisions from significant sources of public international law\, such as the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties and the International Law Commission’s Articles on the Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts. The course will be offered in a hybrid format.\n\n\nSummer Course on Forced Migration: Exploring the intersections between forced migration and technology \nThe course will be offered in a hybrid format\, with some participants attending in person and some attending remotely. \nFor over two decades\, York University’s Centre for Refugee Studies has run an internationally acclaimed\, non-credit professional development Summer Course that brings together practitioners\, policy makers\, and researchers to learn together about the most pressing forced migration and refugee issues. \nThis year’s Summer Course\, which is being offered in collaboration with Osgoode Hall Law School’s Refugee Law Laboratory\, will focus on research\, policy\, and practices at the intersections of forced migration and technology. \nThe number of people on the move increases each year. To adapt to this trend\, institutions that manage borders and refugee adjudication processes are deploying new technologies. At this year’s Summer Course\, we will turn our attention to the problems and opportunities presented by new technologies for refugee status determination systems\, human rights advocates\, border management officials\, and people on the move. \nThis interdisciplinary\, interactive\, and experiential course will explore how technology has been and can be deployed—in both rights enhancing and rights limiting ways—around the world in response to forced migration. \nWe will bring policy makers\, adjudicators\, researchers\, refugees\, and NGO actors together to develop ideas about how technology\, including artificial intelligence and machine learning\, can be used to increase fairness\, protect rights\, and help address forced migration at scale. SUMMARY:International Law Governing Cyber Operations
DESCRIPTION:Students will examine tension areas in U.S.-Russian relations and learn how cyber capabilities affect interstate issues\, both old and new.\n\n\nAbout the Seminar: This virtual seminar on “Introduction to the International Law Governing Cyber Operations” will address the international law appropriate to the evolving frontier of offensive cyber capabilities. In particular\, the course is designed with an emphasis on Russian cyber activity and subsequent U.S. policy debates and responses. As the course progresses\, students will be challenged and grapple with defining standards for the behavior of states in cyberspace that is in line with international law. Subsequently\, students will examine tension areas in U.S.-Russian relations and learn how cyber capabilities affect interstate issues\, both old and new. \nAbout the Instructor: Ethan Burger is a Washington D.C.- based international attorney and educator with a background in cybersecurity\, transnational financial crime\, and Russian legal matters. He has been a full-time faculty member at the American University (School of International Service — Transnational Crime Prevention Center) and the University of Wollongong (Australia) (Faculty of Law — Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention)\, and as well as an Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown University Law Center\, Washington College of Law\, and the University of Baltimore. Last year\, he taught about cybersecurity as a Visiting Professor at Vilnius University on a grant from the Fulbright Foundation. Mr. Burger earned his J.D. at the Georgetown University Law Center\, A.B. from Harvard University\, and obtained a Certificate in Cybersecurity Strategy from Georgetown University. \nCost: $475 \nMore seminars in this series

DESCRIPTION:LIVE training for investigators to gain knowledge needed to begin cryptocurrency related financial crime investigations with confidence.\n\n\nBeginning a Crypto Related Financial Crime Investigation \nEvent Description: This is a LIVE ONLINE 2-hour training session on the focused topic of beginning cryptocurrency related financial crime investigations properly from the standpoint of being local law enforcement interacting with a reporting victim. \n \nOne attendee per ticket purchased. A certificate of completion will be issued to each attendee per the name they register for the event with. \n \nThe beginning of a cryptocurrency related financial crime investigation is arguably the most important part. \n \nDuring your initial interaction with the victim you need to be able to accomplish three very important goals: \n1) You need to understand the informaiton the victim is relaying to you and be able to identify the type of crypto related crime they are reporting. \n2) You need to know the important information to obtain from the victims and the questions that you need to ask in order to obtain it. \n3) You need to understand how to document the information that you obtained in your report. \n \nFrom my experience speaking with Patrol Officers\, Detectives\, and Private Investigators\, this is what stops most crypto related investigations from moving forward. \n \nIt doesn’t need to be this way. \n \nMy name is Larry Nielsen. I have over 17 years of experience in law enforcement and over 7 of those years have been as a Detective investigative financial crimes which includes but is not limited to cryptocurrency related financial crimes. \n \nThe issue that I see the most in law enforcement with cryptocurrency related financial crimes is that there are still many law enforcement officers out there who do not feel confident taking these cases\, interacting with the reporting victims\, collecting the required information\, and properly documenting that information. \n \nWhy is this? Well\, there just isn’t a lot of quality training out there on the topic that relates directly to local law enforcement. \n \nYou are about to register for that training here. \n \nYou will leave this live training with the knowledge that you need to: \n1) feel confident interacting with reporting victim\, understand the information they are relaying and recognize the type of crime/scam they are reporting \n2) gather the important information at the beginning of your investigation \n3) document the information that you obtained from the victim in your report \n \nIn addition\, you will learn relevant cryptocurrency related vocabulary and definitions that will surely make you more knowledgeable and assist you in understanding what your victim is reporting. This training will empower you with the knowledge needed to be of best service to your community and reporting victims when it comes to beginning cryptocurrency related financial crime investigations. \n \nPlus you will leave this training with resources that you can save and use to assist you when beginning these investigations. \n \nYou CAN do this. \n \nJoin our online event to learn the ropes of kickstarting an investigation into crypto-related financial crimes. \n \nOne attendee per ticket purchased.
