SUMMARY:Law Enforcement Use of Facial Recognition in the UK
DESCRIPTION:Law Enforcement Use of Facial Recognition in the UK—A Normative Regulatory Framework?\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr Asress Gikay\, Brunel University London \nThe law enforcement use of automated live facial recognition has caused great concern in Europe. UK law enforcement authorities have deployed the technology in publicly accessible spaces in multiple instances. Today\, there is an increasing call for more robust regulation and governance. Some scholars and advocacy groups also call for an outright ban on the technology’s use by law enforcement authorities. \nHowever\, the UK should take a more balanced regulatory approach to reap the technology’s benefits in improving public safety while addressing its risk. Based on an in-depth study of laws\, policies and practices\, I argue that the UK’s legal regime requires changes to effectively manage the risks posed by the technology\, focusing both on the development and deployment stages. \nAsress Gikay is a Senior Lecturer in AI\, Disruptive Innovation\, and Law at Brunel University London. He is a member of Brunel University Centre for Artificial Intelligence where he co-coordinates the Centre’s Thought Leadership Series. He obtained his PhD (with honour) in Individual Person and Legal Protections from Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa\, Italy) with thesis focusing on the Regulation of Automated Consumer Credit Assessment in the EU and the US. His current research interest is in law\, policy and governance of AI\, with particular focus on fundamental rights including the privacy implications of AI technologies applied in private and public sectors. \n\n\n\nModerator: Dr Pin Lean Lau (Senior Lecturer in Bio-Law\, Brunel University London)

Horan\, OFM\, PhD as he fleshes out the Christian call to attend to issues of justice. How do we become more attentive to the needs of those we consider “other” within both human communities and the more-than-human world? How do we attune ourselves to the interconnectedness of all creation? And how does this relate to living out our Christian faith? \nThis interview is intended to illuminate the Christian understanding of justice and will be conducted by retired civil rights investigator Dcn. David Rolandelli and Sabrina Harper\, Associate of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and Pastoral Associate at St. Matthias Church\, Redwood City\, California. Participants will have the opportunity to ask Fr. Dan their own questions and learn about the spirituality programs (Certificate\, MA\, and PhD) at Oblate School of Theology. \nThe Master of Arts in Spirituality is an ATS accredited graduate level academic program designed to help students from a variety of Christian religious traditions deepen their understanding of Christian spirituality. Students will study various classical and contemporary Christian spiritual and mystical traditions\, movements\, and figures. Graduates will be equipped to better understand their own spiritual journey and prepared to be valuable resources for spirituality and renewal centers\, parish and retreat work\, as well as other spirituality-related faith formation and educational programs in a culturally diverse and globalized world. Students will also be encouraged to participate in cohort integration groups. This program is 36 credits and is available online or face-to-face. \nThe Certificate in Spirituality Studies provides an in-depth understanding of Christian spirituality that enables students to “draw from the deep wells of the tradition” in order to more carefully respond to their spiritual needs and be in service to others. Students study various Christian spiritual and mystical traditions in order that they might more fully understand the relationship of spirituality to various theological\, ethical\, ecclesial\, and practical concerns. This program is 18 credits and is available online or face-to-face. \nSpeaker\nDaniel P. Horan\, OFM\, PhD is Professor of Philosophy\, Religious Studies\, and Theology and the Director of the Center for the Study of Spirituality at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame\, IN. He is also Affiliated Professor of Spirituality at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio\, TX. At OST\, he has taught PhD and MA level classes on Thomas Merton\, Franciscan Spirituality\, and Justice and Spirituality. DESCRIPTION:Pijus Krūminas will discuss how to use modeling techniques in social science and apply them to wargaming.\n\n\nDescription: Social scientists are known to use various mathematical modelling techniques whether game theory\, equilibrium\, agent-based\, big data-driven or other types of models. They also attract weighty criticism due to oversimplification\, assumptions used and the complexity of social reality among other reasons. This webinar will focus on the relationship between wargaming and other modelling approaches in social sciences\, especially game theory. What are the key complementarities? We will locate wargaming in this broader map of social science models to see how it can contribute to better learning and better understanding of social reality. \nBio: Pijus Krūminas is an Associate Professor and programme director at ISM University of Management and Economics in Vilnius\, Lithuania. There he runs classes on wargaming\, game theory\, and comparative politics\, supervises theses based on games as a data collection method\, and simply educates about serious games. Pijus has also been running wargame-based seminars in the field of security and military education.
