The module also explores the legal significance of AI software and AI hardware. \n  \nModule 2 – Legal AI in the Public Sector \nThis module examines the way in which AI is used in public law. The module specifically looks into four distinct ways in which AI is used in the public law context: AI and legal responsibility\, in what ways AI can be used in criminal law\, how to use AI to model law and lastly\, how AI can be used by public authorities and administrations to optimize the services that they provide to us\, the citizens. \n  \nModule 3 – Legal AI in the Public Sector \nThe third module explains the impact of AI in the private sector. The module includes AI and IP Law\, how AI can be a valuable source in predicting legal outcomes and lastly\, how AI and big data can and is being used to impact the financial market. \n  \nModule 4 – Selected Challenges \nIn the fourth and last module of the course\, selected challenges connected to artificial intelligence within various fields of law are discussed. Фонд забезпечує військових технологічними рішеннями\, щоб втрати несли технології\, а не люди. Закуповує тактичну медицину\, щоб ефективно та швидко рятувати поранених; забезпечує прифронтові шпиталі різноманітним обладнання\, щоб лікувати бійців від складних травм\, та надає юридичну допомогу волонтерам.\n Разом ми допоможемо зібрати на 30 FPV дронів справедливості вартістю 660 000 грн.\nДрони — це доступне\, просте та ефективне рішення\, яке поки не покривається державою. DESCRIPTION:International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a set of rules that seeks\, for humanitarian reasons\, to limit the effects of armed conflict.\n\n\nThis introductory course on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is designed to provide humanitarian aid professionals with an understanding of how the legal framework applies\, protects\, and governs conduct in conflict situations. This course allows participants to learn about the origins and sources of the Laws of War and their practical application today. \nThe training gives participants the skills to distinguish between international and non-international armed conflicts. They will gain an understanding of the laws that protect civilians\, detainees\, the wounded and sick\, as well as the regulations pertaining to protected personnel\, such as medical staff. Participants will also learn when protected persons could potentially be deprived of protection. \nBy the end of the training\, participants will grasp the three key principles of IHL that regulate the conduct of hostilities: distinction\, proportionality\, and precaution. They will be able to illustrate how\, when properly applied\, these principles can limit the impact of armed conflict on civilian populations. \nWorkshop duration  \nThe duration of the workshop is 1 hour. \n*Session delivered via Zoom. \nBackground  \nKhalil Dewan is the Head of Legal Investigations at London-based law firm Stoke White\, and a doctoral candidate in Law at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)\, University of London. He has delivered thematic advisory and training on international humanitarian law (IHL). Dewan regularly delivers guest lectures on the Laws of War\, Conflict and Security Law in the UK\, Europe and the Middle East. His work has been cited by the US Army War College Quarterly and the Oxford Research Group. \nAishah Help is running a series of FREE training workshops for charities and non-profits. These workshops are funded by The National Lottery & Platinum Jubilee Fund. As ‘marriage standards’\, today considered to be human rights: minimum age\, freedom of matrimonial consent\, joint presence of spouses to the marriage ceremony; these are presently enforced by jurisdictions in the North-Atlantic and by supranational bodies (such as the EU or human rights’ IOs). The effects of these standards in migration- and private international law are then dominantly racialised\, depriving subjects from the post-colonies of rights and entitlements. The speaker links this biased effect of the ‘marriage standards’ to the colonial and economic relations at play during the process of the international legal standardization (the adoption of the UN Convention on Marriage). The presentation thus first provincializes and de-universalises the human rights’ marriage standards; second it discusses how colonial relations and their economic conditions continue to define the universalism of human rights. \nNicole Stybnarova is a  lecturer in Jurisprudence\, International Law and Forced Migration in Refugee Studies Centre\, University of Oxford. She is currently a PhD Candidate at the Erik Castrén Institute\, University of Helsinki (PhD submission planned for spring 2023). Her research focuses on Migration Law\, Private and Public International Law and Critical Social Theory (in particular\, critiques of the empire\, feminism and Marxism).

Jones Building\, Queen Mary University of London\, Mile End Road\, London E1 4NS \nFormat: In-person \n \nThe Centre for Law and Society in a Global Context’s 2023 Annual Lecture is delighted to invite Prof. Tshepo Madlingozi who will deliver a talk on ‘A Century after Pan-African Congress\, London: Pan-Africanism and the Making of Black Inter-national Constitution(s)’. \n \nAbstract \nThis lecture proposes that black inter-nationalism was an attempt at a decolonial constitution of a people and a world. A hundred years ago\, black internationalists gathered for the Third Pan-African Congress in London (and Lisbon). Pan-African Congresses enabled strategic collaborations of black actors across the divide of colony\, state\, nation\, and local cultures – hence black inter-nationalism. However\, there is a paradox and tension at the heart of their emancipatory horizon: calling for territorial sovereignty and statehood and at the same time prefiguring an internationalism that would subvert the nation-state. In this era of imperial nostalgia\, racist-patriarchal-xenophobic nationalisms\, and decoloniality-as-nativism\, this lecture revisits Pan-African Congresses to draw lessons for an insurgent and decolonial cosmopolitanism that could resist global racial-patriarchal capitalism.  \nSpeaker Bio \nProfessor Tshepo Madlingozi is the Director of the Centre for Applied Legal Studies and an Associate Professor at the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand\, where he teaches on social justice and human rights. He is a Research Associate at the Chair for Critical Studies in Higher Education at Nelson Mandela University\, a Visiting Professor at the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam\, and a Faculty Member of the Vienna Master of Arts in Applied Human Rights. Tshepo co-edits the South African Journal on Human Rights and sits on the boards of the Rural Democracy Trust\, Institute for Social Dialogue\, and Afrika Ikalafe Spiritual Health Institute. He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the African Coalition for Corporate Accountability (ACCA)\, and a member of the advisory board of Health Justice Initiative. The book is the first comprehensive historical analysis of unaccompanied child migration to the United States from 1930 to present day. The book argues that the US response to unaccompanied child migration has been consistently driven by a geopolitics of compassion that prioritises foreign policy and domestic political objectives over children’s best interests. \nThe event is co-sponsored by the (B)OrderS Centre for the Legal Study of Borders and Migration and the Childhood\, Law\, and Policy Network. \nAbout the speakers \nAnita Casavantes Bradford is Professor of History and Chicano/Latino Studies at the University of California Irvine. She is interested in the interface between migration\, policy\, race\, and age\, and in the impact of legal status on the experiences of belonging and access to social services. AI promises modernised identity checks and border controls\, as well as expedited and more efficient decision-making in relation to applications for visas\, residence permits or asylum applications. In immigration systems suffering from backlogs\, lengthy delays and uncertain outcomes\, the deployment of AI technology appears as a panacea for treating pathogenic practices and promoting neutrality\, objectivity and standardisation in decision-making\, thus decreasing or restricting cases of individuals subjected to discriminatory treatment. At the same time\, the increasing utilisation of AI applications seems to be heading towards the development of highly autonomous borders which can automatically pre-determine one’s right of entry or stay in the country based on their legal status\, sophisticated risk assessments and biometric analysis\, and limit human intervention to very few highly complex cases. This autonomy may also reinforce existing non-entreé policies and entails significant implications for the protection of human rights\, such as the right to respect for private life and protection of personal data\, non-discrimination and effective remedies. To get our bearings we must return to first principles. This book articulates and defends a comprehensive\, coherent\, and compelling conception of the rule of law and defends it against serious challenges to its intelligibility\, relevance\, and normative force. The rule of law’s ambition\, it argues\, is to provide protection and recourse against the arbitrary exercise of power using the distinctive tools of the law. Law provides a bulwark of protection\, a bridle on the powerful\, and a bond constituting and holding together the polity and giving public expression to an ideal mode of association. Two principles immediately follow from this core: sovereignty of law\, demanding that those who exercise ruling power govern with law and that law governs them\, and equality in the eyes of the law\, demanding that law’s protection extend to all bound by it. Animating law’s rule\, the ethos of fidelity commits all members of the political community\, officials and lay members alike\, to take responsibility for holding each other accountable under the law. Part I articulates this conception and locates its moral foundation in a commitment to common membership of each person\, recognizing their freedom\, dignity\, and status as peers. Viewing law as the product not merely of edicts or doctrines but of expressive action\, it investigates the performances that literally created law: in civic arenas\, courtrooms\, judges’ chambers\, marketplaces\, scaffolds\, and streets. It examines the legal codes\, learned treatises\, trial reports\, lawyers’ manuals\, execution narratives\, rhetoric books\, images (and more) that confronted these performances\, praising their virtues or denouncing their evils. In so doing\, it recovers a long\, rich\, and largely overlooked tradition of jurisprudential thought about law as a performance practice. This tradition not only generated an elaborate poetics and politics of legal performance. It provided western jurisprudence with a set of constitutive norms that\, in working to distinguish law from theatrics\, defined the very nature of law. In the crucial opposition between law and theatre\, law stood for cool deliberation\, by-the-book rules\, and sovereign discipline. Theatre stood for deceptive artifice\, entertainment\, histrionics\, melodrama. And yet legal performance\, even at its most theatrical\, also appeared fundamental to law’s realization: a central mechanism for shaping legal subjects\, key to persuasion\, essential to deterrence\, indispensable to law’s power\, —as it still does today. \nIn addition to being the H. Gordon Garbedian Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University\, Professor Peters is also one of the Law School’s Global Professorial Fellows. Now in their 8th year\, the Annual Cotterrell Lectures in Sociological Jurisprudence are named in honour of our colleague Professor Roger Cotterrell.\n \n \n‘Sociological jurisprudence’ is understood broadly in the series\, as encompassing any theoretical aspect of socio-legal studies\, any serious effort to relate jurisprudence and legal theory to changing social and historical conditions\, or any topic linking law and social theory. \n \nAbstract \nPerformance as Lawmaking in the Age of Streaming Media\n \nLaw has always been a domain of performance\, forged in dramatic encounters between suspects and police\, defendants and judges\, prisoners and guards\, sovereigns and subjects. In our era\, such encounters have become ever-visible\, multiplying kaleidoscopically as they stream across our screens. In this lecture\, I will look closely at several paradigmatic scenes of legal performance—in courtrooms\, prisons\, and the streets—suggesting how they enact law dialogically while implicitly theorizing and interpreting it. I will argue that sociological jurisprudence cannot do without performance jurisprudence: jurisprudence that treats broad social forces as the product of specific expressive encounters in local space and time; that views law as viscerally experiential; that zooms in to examine how it actually unfolds in the moment; that recognizes the jurisprudential operations of performance itself\, —its interpretive and lawmaking power. Theorizing the legal “scene\,” its relationship to the streaming media it produces\, and its formation of the spectator as legal subject\, pondering the dilemmas of law-by-media\, I will consider how the performance encounter may both intervene in doctrine and exceed doctrinal capture\, acting in ways too heterogeneous and contradictory to be easily classified\, resonating subliminally toward an unknown future. \nAbout the Speaker \nProfessor Peters (BA Yale\, PhD Princeton\, JD Columbia) specializes in a number of fields that traverse traditional period divisions: law and humanities; drama\, theatre\, and performance; and film and comparative media. Her most recent book is Law as Performance: Theatricality\, Spectatorship\, and the Making of Law in Ancient\, Medieval\, and Early Modern Europe (Oxford University Press\, 2022).

Over the years\, the fault-lines have shifted from whether to incorporate a Bill of Rights to much deeper disagreement with respect to the people and the central power of the state. In this talk I will neither endorse the conservative case against a written constitution\, nor will I argue for the existing constitution to be codified. Instead\, I first assess the content of various proposals for a written constitution. I then problematize the process of constitution-making by asking not whether the UK constitution should be codified\, but by relating the constitution to the people as the authors and to the state as its object. \n \nAbout the Speaker \n \nDr Jo Murkens is a Professor of Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He studied English and European Law at QMUL.

SUMMARY:Marie-Claire Foblets on Law for a Better Future
DESCRIPTION:This event is organised by the Minerva LAW Network\n\n\nMany different conceptions of law exist side by side in multicultural societies – a reality that formal legal systems have ignored for far too long\, according to Marie-Claire Foblets. As Director of the Department for Law and Anthropology at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (since 2012)\, she hopes to help change this situation. \nHaving been born in Belgium and spending most of her youth in that country\, Prof. Foblets soon became interested in plural societies and the conditions for sustainable peace among diverse groups. She was trained in law at the universities of Antwerp (1977-1979) and Leuven (1979-1982) in Belgium\, and also studied Thomist philosophy in parallel with law. Thanks to a study fellowship (1982-1983)\, she was given the opportunity to pursue further study in philosophy at the Wilhelms-Universität of Münster\, in Nordrhein-Westfalen\, Germany\, and to complete her studies in social and cultural anthropology (1985). \nUpon completion of her studies\, Prof. Foblets was called to the French-speaking section of the Brussels Bar. She spent a decade practising law with a firm that specialised in matters related to migration and minority issues. In the same period\, she defended her doctoral thesis in social and cultural anthropology\, which was inspired to a large extent by her legal practice. \nFor more than twenty years Prof. Foblets taught law as well as social and cultural anthropology in the universities of Antwerp and Brussels. Before becoming a member of the Max Planck Society in March 2012\, she was professeur ordinaire (full professor) at the Catholic University of Leuven\, where she headed the Institute for Migration Law and Legal Anthropology. She has also been a member of various networks of researchers focusing either on the study of the application of Islamic law in Europe or on law and migration in Europe\, including the Association française d’anthropologie du droit (AFAD)\, of which she served as co-president for several years. \nIn 2001\, she was elected to the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB). In 2004\, she received the Francqui Prize\, the most distinguished scientific award in the humanities in Belgium. \nAt the intersection of Law & Anthropology \nSince 2018\, Prof. Foblets is heading a long-term project under the title ‘Cultural and Religious Diversity under State Law across Europe’ (CUREDI). CUREDI is a digital repository of cases – with a focus on case law analysis – that have to do with cultural and religious diversity and that show if\, how\, and to what extent diversity is granted legal recognition within the domestic legal systems of member states of the EU\, UK\, and Switzerland.  \nThe CUREDI project is unparalleled in Europe in its effort to identify\, document\, and offer in-depth analyses of legal reasoning on the manifold issues related to the growing social diversity throughout the EU. The cases show how domestic legal orders are gradually adapting to the reality of increasing cultural and religious diversity\, as well as the demands for its recognition. The analyses focus on the arguments used in the rulings to justify the granting or\, conversely\, the rejection of claims to recognition of traditions\, concepts\, practices\, beliefs\, etc. Of particular relevance to the aims of CUREDI are references to empirical evidence\, anthropological literature\, or expert testimony used in judicial or administrative contexts to render a decision. \n \n\n\n\nPhoto: Sven Döring

DESCRIPTION:CEILA Annual Lecture 2022-23: To the Uttermost Parts of the Earth Legal Imagination and International Power 1300–1870\n\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, 8th February at 5pm – 6.30 pm \nWhere: Room 2.10\, School of Law\, Mile End Road\, London E1 4NS (via Westfield Way) \nFormat: Hybrid \nThis event is followed by a drinks reception. \n \nAbstract:  \nIn this lecture\, Professor Martti Koskenniemi (University of Helsinki) will present his latest book. To the Uttermost Parts of the Earth shows the vital role played by legal imagination in the formation of the international order during 1300–1870. It discusses how European statehood arose during early modernity as a locally specific combination of ideas about sovereign power and property rights\, and how those ideas expanded to structure the formation of European empires and consolidate modern international relations. By connecting the development of legal thinking with the history of political thought and by showing the gradual rise of economic analysis into predominance\, the author argues that legal ideas from different European legal systems – Spanish\, French\, English and German – have played a prominent role in the history of global power. This history has emerged in imaginative ways to combine public and private power\, sovereignty and property. \nThis event is hosted by the Centre for European and International Legal Affairs and co-hosted with Sheffield Centre for International and European Law. The discussant will be  Professor Nicholas Tsagourias\, The University of Sheffield. \n \nSpeaker:  \nMartti Koskenniemi is Emeritus Professor of International Law at the University of Helsinki and Director of the Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights. He was a member of the Finnish diplomatic service 1978-1994\, Judge with the Administrative Tribunal of the Asian Development Bank (1997- 2002) member of the International Law Commission (UN) in 2002-2006. \nHe has worked with several UN agencies and bodies and pleaded with the International Court of Justice. He has held lengthier visiting professorships in\, among other places\, NYU\, Columbia University\, University of Cambridge\, London School of Economics\, Melbourne University and Universities of Brussels\, Paris\, Sao Paulo and Utrecht. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has a doctorate h.c. from the Universities of Uppsala\, Frankfurt and McGill. His main publications include From Apology to Utopia; The Structure of International Legal Argument (1989/2005)\, The Gentle Civilizer of Nations: The Rise and Fall of International Law 1870-1960 (2001) and The Politics of International Law (2011). His latest work on the (pre-)history of international law is To the Uttermost Parts of the Earth: Legal Imagination and International Power (2021).     \nNicholas Tsagourias is Professor of International Law at the University of Sheffield. His research interests are in the fields of international law and the use of force\, international humanitarian law\, international criminal law\, collective security law\, peacekeeping\, United Nations Law\, international and European constitutional theory and law and he is widely published in these fields. \nProfessor Tsagourias also sits on the editorial board for the Journal of Conflict and Security Law and for the Journal on the Use of Force and International Law. He is the convenor of the European Society of International Law Interest Group on Peace and Security and a member of the AHRC Peer Review College. He also holds a visiting post at the University of Umea\, Sweden.
